Reasons to choose an apartment in Barcelona over a hotel

October 5, 2012 in Holiday Travel

If you’re booking a holiday, you’re most likely searching for a hotel to stay in, but hold on just a second! Hotels are probably the most common and standard way to stay in a location, and we choose them out of habit. Why not try something a little different this time? How about staying in an apartment? This form of accommodation Barcelona has many of may not have even crossed you mind, but for some people it is the ideal solution, definitely even more so than a hotel. Could an apartment be the cheaper and better alternative to a hotel that you’ve been searching for? Let’s take a look:

Travelling in groups

If you’re travelling as a group of friends then an apartment is most definitely the best type of accommodation for you. In a hotel, you will most likely be split up if there are more than 4 of you. That doesn’t happen in an apartment. Seeing as most apartments can easily sleep at least 4 people, everyone gets to stay in the same place. After a long day of travelling, you can all chill out and talk about what happened, and plan the day after together, instead of being split up and co-ordinating everything at once the next day.

A great value price per square metre and more space

An average hotel room sizes up at around 30 sq meters. Although Barcelona and Madrid apartments aren’t famous for being all that big, almost all the apartments that you can rent are bigger than the average hotel room. What’s more is that they’re also generally cheaper. You might pay 50€ per person per night for a hotel in Barcelona, whereas with an apartment like OK Apartment Barcelona – Tallers IIIcan come in around €25 per person per night, that’s already half. If you then divide the square meters by the price you pay, the savings get even higher. The apartment comes in at only 0.25€/sq m per person per night and the hotel is almost 7 times as much at 1.66€ per person per night.

Save yet more money with self catering

When you’re in a hotel, remember that you also have to think about paying for meals. The prices for breakfast in most hotels is completely unjustified, and is around 13€ per person per day. That’s not even including dinner each night which you might pay the same for if you’re lucky enough to find a cheap place to eat. In an apartment, kitchens come well-equipped so that you can pay the same amount for food as you would at home or as a local (food prices aren’t so expensive in Spain). You can pay a lot less than that per day by buying food locally.

More homely and well located

When you’re staying in an apartment, you’ll be living the most authentic experience of the city. Not only will you be travelling as a tourist, but you’ll also be living as a resident. You don’t have to worry about running into other guests, or privacy, because for the duration of your stay, the home is yours. Wifi is usually included as standard in Barcelona apartments. One of the greatest thing about apartments is that they can be found in practically any part of the city that you can imagine. Want an apartment that’s between the beach, a metro station, and a great restaurant? There’s an apartment for that! There are so many that if you have very specific requirements, then you’re more likely to meet those with an apartment than with a hotel.

Hopefully by now you can appreciate the benefits of staying in an apartment rather than a hotel. Of course, an apartment isn’t the accommodation choice for everyone, but for most people it’s definitely an option you’ll want to consider first. Next time you plan a holiday, think about staying in something other than a hotel.

Preparing for your travel can be a very stressful, making sure that you have everything you need for your vacation. When traveling abroad it is even harder because you have to prepare things in different languages making sure that all of your hotels or hostels are organized and that you have a cellphone works while you are abroad for emergencies.

#1 Get a passport or Visa

Getting a Passport is the easiest way for someone to get ready all you have to do is go to your local post office and fill out a a couple of long documents and then make a appointment with them.  If the document is filled out correctly then all you have to do is wait about two weeks and pay a small fee then you will have passport in the mail. The more difficult approach is depends on where you are traveling to in the world.  Some countries require you to have visas for you can visit the country, for tourism or business this makes it a little more difficult. Depending on where you live in the United States and where you want to go all you have to do is fill out some more paper work about your trip and to make sure that you have enough money to support your vacation while you are away. For some states this is very difficult because the Embassies for these countries are far away making it very difficult to stop by and drop off documents so there are many companies that you can contact and they will make it easier on you to get a visa this is a great idea if you are in a hurry to get somewhere. Yeah step one complete. So now you are allowed from both countries governments to visit them.

#2 Find out where to Stay

Finding a Hotel or a Hostel Abroad sometimes can be very difficult depending on the time of year. Do not expect to just drive up and expect to have a place to stay in a lot of cities especially during the summer. Hotels get full fast in summer because everyone is taking holidays at the same time or there could be an event going on where you are going it is always safer to plan in advance.  Most hotels around the world know English or can at least get by with English making it easy to call and make a reservation. You will be glad you booked your hotel early for you will be sleeping in the next town instead of the city you really wanted to see.

#3 Shopping

Make sure that you have all of the appropriate equipment to make the vacation you are planning. For an example you are planning on walking a lot buy new shoes and test them out. You do not want something to bother you while you are on vacation. Having a the right suitcase or backpack is also necessary moving around your stuff as easy as possible. If you plan on visiting several cities in that country it is better to have better equipment to do this very easily.  I would also research the country to make sure that you know what you are getting yourself into. This is always helpful of knowing what to buy and bring with you.

#4 Medication

Having a first aid kit is important when you are abroad but while you are vacationing through different countries and cultures it is always a drag not to have the night medicine that you need for what illness you have. I recommend bringing a little bit of each aspirin, allergy medicine, diarrhea medication, just to name a few. These different cultures with food and other things you will never know how it is expecting to affect your body it always better to be prepared then to lay in bed sick and miss some of your amazing vacation.

#5 Last Minute Stuff

Making sure that you are ready the night before just go through everything even though you already packed take it all out and make sure that everything on your list is there and go through a plan of worst case scenarios of what if this happens and if this happens. Like if there is no one to pick me up from the airport when i arrive what do I do. I know that it sounds silly but when that situation does happen it makes you feel a lot better and prepared.  Do you have your ticket and passport and do the most important thing which is to have fun!
